The Kansas Archeological Training Program (KATP) Field School returns June 4-15, giving history enthusiasts a chance to explore Kansas' past through hands-on archaeological work, educational workshops, and public programs.

Hosted by the Kansas Historical Society in partnership with the Kansas Anthropological Association, the annual field school welcomes participants of all ages and experience levels. Attendees work alongside professional and experienced avocational archeologists to help uncover and document pieces of Kansas history.

This year's field school will focus on several sites throughout Russell, including:

  • A petroglyph carving site
  • A possible tipi ring site
  • A historic farmstead
  • A historic schoolhouse
  • A two-story stone structure
  • A World War II Army Air Force-related site

Many of these locations have never been formally documented or researched, and ongoing survey work could lead to the discovery of additional sites.

In addition to excavation projects, the field school features workshops, tours, and presentations from experts discussing archeological discoveries, preservation efforts, and Kansas history.
