GOW: Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs End Homecoming Game at Halftime, Dominating Lakeside

The Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs (5-0) trampled their way through the Lakeside Knights (2-3) 58-6 as they improve to 2-0 in district play and win their homecoming game in dominant fashion. 

The Mustangs played a close to perfect game, scoring on all 8 offensive drives and firing on all cylinders, including causing 4 turnovers and returning a punt to the house.

The Mustang's dominance started right off the first couple drives of the game. Their defense forced a quick three-and-out, to which they then scored on their first offensive play, as junior Zayne Maupin took his first carry for 6. The two-point conversion was good, and the lead was now 8-0 with 10:19 left in the first quarter.

After the kickoff and a few good yardage plays from the Knights, Lakeside was forced to punt once again and just threw plays later, senior quarterback for the Mustangs Carter Johnson ran in a 25-yard touchdown to cap off a 3-play, 51-yard drive. The two point was no good, leaving the score at 14-0 for Sylvan-Lucas with 6:45 left in the first quarter.

Another good drive stalled out with another punt for Lakeside, giving the ball right back to the Mustangs to put up just one more score before the end of the first quarter. Johnson connected with Homecoming King Vance Dohl on an 11-yard touchdown pass, two point try was successful, and with 39.1 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter, the Mustang lead was 22-0.

The Knights needed to respond quickly, but the Mustangs defense was up to the task, forcing their first turnover of the game, recovering a Lakeside fumble on the Knights 8-yard line. After a penalty set them back five yards, Zayne Maupin added a second score to his stat sheet, crossing the goal line on a 13-yard touchdown run. After another successful two point try, the score was 30-0 with 11:40 left in the second quarter.

Both the offense and defense for the Mustangs have put their hand in this game so far, so it was time for the special teams to get some love. After yet another three-and-out for the Knights, Zayne Maupin returned the ensuing punt 42 yards to the house. A failed two-point conversion makes the score 36-0 with 10:25 left in the half.

On the ensuing kickoff, special teams strike again for the Mustangs, forcing a fumble and recovering it on the Lakeside 35. The drive was capped off by a 3-yard Cai Labertew touchdown run. With a successful two-point conversion, the score was now 44-0 with 8:25 left in the half. 

The defensive stand for the Mustangs kept strong, as just two plays into the Knights next drive, the Homecoming King, Dohl, strikes again, intercepting Lakeside's quarterback Eli Schmitt. Dohl returned it for the touchdown, but the score was called back due to a penalty, giving the Mustangs the ball on the Lakeside 11. This drive ended with yet another 11-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Dohl. The two point try was successful, leaving the score at 52-0 with 8:25 left in the half. 

Another fumble by the Knights leads to the Mustangs fourth turnover created in the game. The second-string offense was in the game for Sylvan-Lucas, but they didn't let up either. After a 7-play, 37-yard, they increased the lead to 58-0 after a Cooper Johnson touchdown run of 5-yards.

The Knights were able to put up one score at the end of the game. With time expiring, senior running back for Lakeside Landon Baetz ran in a 24-yard touchdown. The two point try was no good, giving us the final score of 58-6 as the Mustangs knelt the ball following the kickoff.

Stellar performances were all over the field for Sylvan-Lucas, including Zayne Maupin who rushed for 96 yards on 7 carries, equaling out to 13.7 yards per carry, and scoring 3 times, including a 42-yard punt return for a touchdown. Homecoming King Vance Dohl put up great numbers on both sides of the ball, bringing in 22 receiving yards, 2 receiving touchdowns on 2 receptions, and also adding an interception on the defensive side of the ball. Quarterback Carter Johnson did a little bit of everything on the offensive side of the ball, including 22 passing yards on 2/2 passing and 2 passing touchdowns, as well as 34 yards rushing on 4 carries and a touchdown on the ground. 

The Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs (5-0, 2-0 District) will travel to Clifton-Clyde next Friday to take on the Eagles with a kickoff of 7 pm.
