Averie Counts, Aalyiah Trevino, Arianna Weigel and Kinsey Zorn all captured state championships. Prior to this season, Russell had six total wrestlers, boys and girls combined, who had won an individual state title.

Counts pinned Maggie Holle from Atwood-Rawlins County to take the 130 pound division and finish the season with a perfect 44-0 record. The Russell sophomore pinned all four of her state opponents.

Trevino edged Cali Wagoner from Oakley on a 2-1 Decision to win the 155 title and finish her freshman season with an impressive 39-5 mark.

Weigel won the 120 pound division with a fall at the 1:30 mark over Josie Bell from Hoxie to cap off her freshman season with a 43-3 record. Weigel also pinned all four of her opponents at state.

Zorn took the 145 crown with an 8-0 decision over Sophie Homolka of Ellsworth to complete a perfect 30-0 season. It is the RHS junior's second-consecutive state title after winning the 135 pound division a year ago.

Russell had three others wrestle in state championship matches - Karsyn Hamlin, Xzander Donner and Xzephren Donner.

Hamlin lost by a fall (2:53) to Kaison Miller from Norton and wound up her freshman year with an 18-4 record and a state runner-up finish at 120.

Xzander Donner lost on a 4-0 decision to top-seeded Corbin Franklin of Atwood-Rawlins County. The Russell sophomore finishes with a 40-2 record and runner-up at 106.

Xzephren Donner lost by a technical fall (4:10) to #1 seed Roman Tuttle from Southeast of Saline. Despite the loss, Donner will go down as one of the best wrestlers in Russell history. The RHS senior had a 139-33 career record and not only made the state tournament all four years, he medaled three. Donner finished third as a sophomore, state champion as a junior (first Russell boys state champ since 1969) and runner-up as a senior. He also ended his senior campaign with a 42-2 mark. Donner will continue his wrestling career at Fort Hays State University.

Russell had five other wrestlers make state, but fell short of the medal rounds.

On the girls side, Camry Ney went 2-2 at 115 and ended her freshman season with a 21-11 record. Mya Trevino ended her high school career by going 2-2 at 135 pounds. She had a 36-7 mark her senior season and finished with a 112-37 career record. Trevino went to state three times and finished as high as fourth her junior year. She will wrestle at Barton Community College. Chaysie Bachman went 1-2 at 140 in her second career trip to state and ended with a 34-7 record.
