The Russell High School girls basketball team traveled to Phillipsburg on Friday, January 7 and lost 55-37.

The Lady Panthers led 11-8 after the first quarter and 19-15 at halftime. Phillipsburg pulled away in the third period and led 37-24 heading into the fourth quarter. Phillipsburg's Taryn Sides scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the final frame and the Lady Panthers cruised to the win.

Rylan Reeves paced Russell with nine points. Eight Lady Broncos scored.

Along with 19 points from Sides, Abby Babcock added 10 points for the Lady Panthers. Nine Phillipsburg girls scored.

Russell committed 20 turnovers and forced 14 Phillipsburg turnovers.

The Russell girls fall to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Mid-Continent League.

The Russell boys also fell Friday night at Phillipsburg. The Panthers won 56-40.

Russell jumped out to a 13-8 lead after one quarter and the game was tied 23-23 at the break. Phillipsburg claimed the advantage in the third stanza and led 39-33 heading into the fourth. The Panthers pulled away in the final quarter.

Jackson Cross led Russell with a career-high 17 points. Jace Peerman followed with 11 points. In all, seven Broncos scored.

Tyler Davis paced Phillipsburg with 15 points. Julius Stutterheim followed with 13 points and Jesse Blackburn scored 10 points.

The Russell boys fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the MCL.

Next up, the Russell boys will play Victoria on Monday, January 10 at around 6:30 PM. The game was added to the schedule in December following the cancellation of the Russell at Stockton boys game. Monday's game, which is in Russell at Amos Morris Gym, will be broadcast on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com.
