Five members of the Russell High School track and field team have qualified for the state track and field meet in Wichita.

Jacob Ney, Jace Peerman, Peyton Pfannenstiel, Brayden Strobel and Jesse Whitmer all punched their tickets after finishing in the top four of their events at the Class 3A Regional Meet in Phillipsburg on Thursday, May 19.

Peerman took third in both the high jump and long jump. Strobel placed fourth in the high jump. And the 4x100 relay team of Strobel, Pfannenstiel, Ney and Whitmer won the regional title. It was believed their time of 43.69 broke the school record, but did not. It was set in 2001 with a time of 43.61.

No Russell girls qualified for state.

The RHS boys placed ninth out of 16 schools with 29 points, while the Russell girls had no points. Southeast of Saline captured the boys regional title with 153 points and beat second place Scott City by a whopping 87 points. Smoky Valley cruised to the girls team title with 102 points.

The State Track and Field Meet will be held Friday and Saturday, May 27-28 at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University. Classes 4A, 5A and 6A take the morning session on Friday with 1A, 2A and 3A going in the afternoon. Events continue throughout the day on Saturday.
