The Russell High School boys basketball team defeated Phillipsburg 48-39 in WaKeeney on Monday, January 23 to claim third place in the Mid-Continent League Tournament.

The Broncos jumped out to a 14-6 lead after one quarter and led 22-17 at intermission. Russell extended its lead to 36-26 after three periods, Phillipsburg got to within three points in the final frame, but the Broncos held on for the 48-39 victory.

Senior Jackson Cross paced Russell with 16 points. Senior Jordayn Buhrle followed with 15 points and four blocks.

Junior Ryan Babcock led the Panthers with nine points.

Phillipsburg outrebounded the Broncos 32 to 27 overall and 15 to 5 on the offensive glass.

Both teams committed 19 turnovers.

Russell was 8-of-14 from the free throw line and Phillipsburg was 8-of-16.

The Russell boys improve to 8-5 overall and remain 3-1 in the league.
