The Russell High School football team traveled to Goodland on Friday, October 16 and lost 33-16 to the Cowboys.

Goodland (3-3, 1-2 3A District 6) scored the first touchdown of the game at the 9:05 mark in the first quarter with a 13-yard run by quarterback Leyton Cure. The extra-point kick was good and the Cowboys led 7-0 after one period.

Cure capped off an 11-play, 68-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run at the 11:13 mark in the second stanza. The extra-point kick was no good. With 2:48 left in the first half, Cure connected with wide receiver Devontay Hardy for a 50-yard TD pass. The extra-point kick was good. Russell (0-7, 0-4 3A District 6) running back Jesse Whitmer broke free for a 68-yard touchdown run with 2:03 to play in the half. The two-point conversion was good. However, Cure scored another rushing TD, this time from just one-yard out, with six seconds remaining in the second quarter. The extra-point kick was good and the Cowboys led 27-8 at the break.

The Broncos scored on their opening possession of the second half when Whitmer capped off an 11-play, 65-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown scamper at the 8:21 mark in the third period. The two-point conversion was good. The Cowboys answered with a 13-play, 55-yard drive resulting in another one-yard touchdown run by Cure with 2:11 to play in the third quarter. The extra-point kick was no good, but Goodland led 33-16 after three frames and neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

Goodland outgained Russell 414 total yards to 270. The Cowboys finished with 266 yards rushing and 148 yards passing, while the Broncos totaled 226 yards on the ground and 44 yards through the air.

Cure led Goodland with 170 yards rushing on 32 carries and 148 yards passing on eight completions.

Whitmer led Russell with 133 yards rushing on eight carries.

Russell lost two fumbles and Goodland did not turn the ball over.
