The Russell High School girls basketball team faced Phillipsburg in the Mid-Continent League tournament semifinals on Friday, January 21 in Plainville and lost 55-42.

The Lady Panthers led 19-8 after one quarter, 36-20 at the break and 45-29 after three periods, doing just enough to hold off a pesky Lady Bronco team down the stretch and take the 55-42 win.

Rylan Reeves and Camille Dortland each scored 10 points for Russell. Aniya Stierlen followed with nine points and 12 rebounds.

Brynn Billings led Phillipsburg with 13 points. Trinitti Gross scored 12 points and Taryn Sides and Jaelyn Miller each finished with 10 points.

Phillipsburg outrebounded Russell just 26 to 25. However, the Lady Broncos outrebounded Phillipsburg 10 to 6 on the offensive glass.

Both teams shot well from the free throw line. Russell was 15-of-20 and Phillipsburg was 8-of-10.

The Russell girls fall to 6-5 overall and remain 2-2 in the MCL.

The sixth-seeded Russell girls head right back to Plainville on Saturday, January 22 to play for third place in the tournament. The Lady Broncos will face top-seed Smith Center at around 1 PM in Plainville's Cardinal Gym in the third place contest. Fourth-seeded TMP-Marian upset the Lady Red on Friday in Plainville, winning 52-50. Catch Saturday's third place girls game on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com.
