Camille Dortland scored 12 points including nine in the third quarter and Kelvie Reeves added 11 as the Russell Lady Broncos cruised to a 55-9 victory over Plainville in Mid-Continent League Basketball action Tuesday evening at Amos Morris Gymnasium.

Plainville opened the scoring on a free throw by Kadence Bruso, but the Lady Broncos responded by scoring the game's next 45 points on their way to the win.  The fourth quarter of the game with played with a running clock.

In all, 10 players scored for Russell (8-7, 4-2 MCL) while defensively the Lady Broncos forced 26 Lady Cardinal turnovers.  Mearianda Sherraden paced Plainville (0-13, 0-6 MCL) with three points.

The Boys game marked the third meeting of the season between the Broncos and the Cardinals and this matchup turned out to be just as entertaining as the first two as Russell fought back from 12 points down in the third quarter to defeat Plainville 58-50.

Russell outlasted Plainville 64-60 in overtime on December 9 in the semifinals of the Amos Morris Classic after trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half.  On January 15 in Stockton, the Cardinals returned the favor, overcoming a nine-point deficit just before halftime to win 59-58 in the first round of the MCL Tournament.

The Cardinals, led by hot early shooting from their top two scorers raced to a 19-9 advantage after the first eight minutes  The second quarter was even as the Broncos got as close as five points before Plainville went into intermission leading 35-26.  After Russell closed the gap to four points early in the third quarter, the Cardinals used an 8-0 surge to grab a 43-31 cushion and they appeared ready to salt the game away.

However, Russell (8-6, 2-3 MCL) stormed back and used a 25-3 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters to lead 56-46 with 24 seconds left in the game.  Plainville though would not go quietly.  After Anders Dewey sank two free throws, he scored another basket after a Bronco turnover to cut the margin to 56-50 in a matter of just six seconds.

On the next possession, Jackson Cross, Russell's leading scorer was fouled and he capped off a relatively quiet night by making two free throws to put the game away and give the Broncos their eighth victory of the season, representing their highest win total since they won 11 games during the 2009-10 season.

Nine different Russell players scored Tuesday night but none reached double figures.  Cross and Josh Sohm were the leaders with nine points apiece.  Dewey led all scorers for Plainville (6-9, 1-5 MCL) with 19 points while Cameron Lindsey added 13 points.

Both Russell teams begin a stretch of three straight road games on Friday, February 4 when they travel to Oakley for another MCL doubleheader.  The Girls game will tip off at 6 p.m. with the Boys to follow.  Both games can be heard on KRSL AM 990/98.1 FM and streamed online at KRSL.com
