Russell Splits Amos Morris Classic First Round

Boys: Russell 52, St. John's-Tipton 35

The Russell High School girls basketball team opened the Amos Morris Classic basketball tournament on Monday, December 5 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell with a 62-26 loss to St. John's-Tipton.

The Lady Jays controlled the game from start to finish and led 23-5 after one quarter, 37-13 at halftime and 53-24 after three periods. Most of the fourth frame was played with a running clock and St. John's-Tipton won 62-26.

Sophomore Taylor Birney led Russell with 10 points. Sophomore Kelvie Reeves followed with nine points.

Sophomore Carlie Brummer paced SJT with 18 points. Senior Ella Wiles followed with 16 points and junior Jenna Gengler scored 11 points.

The Lady Jays outrebounded the Lady Broncos 26 to 14 and 14 to 0 on the offensive glass.

Russell committed 35 turnovers and the Lady Jays had 27 turnovers.

The Russell girls fall to 0-2 overall.

The Russell boys also opened the Amos Morris Classic against St. John's-Tipton Monday evening. The Broncos prevailed 52-35.

The Blujays led 9-6 after one stanza and 23-20 at the break. The Russell defense put the clamps on SJT in the third quarter, only allowing three field goals, and the Broncos led 36-29 heading into the fourth quarter. Russell only allowed one field goal in the final period and pulled away for the 52-35 victory.

Senior Jackson Cross led the Broncos with 13 points. Senior Jace Peerman followed with 11 points and senior Jordayn Buhrle scored 10 points.

Junior Daniel Eilert paced the Blujays with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Russell outrebounded the Blujays 39 to 22 and 14 to 9 on the offensive boards.

The Broncos were 13-of-26 from the free throw line and St. John's-Tipton was 11-of-27.

The Russell boys improve to 2-0 overall.

The Russell girls will play Plainville in the consolation semifinals on Thursday, December 8 at 3:30 PM at Amos Morris Gym in Russell. The Central Plains girls defeated Plainville 86-9 on Monday.

The Russell boys will play Central Plains in the semifinals on Thursday, December 8 at 8 PM at Amos Morris Gym. The Central Plains boys defeated Plainville 54-46 in overtime on Monday.
