Russell Splits at Trego

Girls: Russell 58, Trego 49

The Russell High School girls basketball team traveled to WaKeeney to play Trego Community on Friday, February 11 and won 58-49.

Trego led 14-11 after the first quarter and 23-21 at halftime. Russell outscored the Lady Golden Eagles 16-7 in the third period and claimed a 37-30 advantage heading into the final frame. Lady Bronco freshman Kelvie Reeves scored 12 of her career-high 16 points in the fourth quarter and Russell held on for the 58-49 win.

Following Kelvie Reeves' 16 points for Russell were seniors Camille Dortland and Aniya Stierlen with 14 points each. Stierlen also had 13 rebounds.

Annabelle Malsam led Trego with 15 points. Caroline Brungardt followed with 10 points.

Russell was 21-of-29 from the free throw line and Trego was just 8-of-13.

The Lady Broncos outrebounded Trego 30 to 29, but the Lady Golden Eagles had an eight to four advantage on the offensive glass.

The Russell girls improve to 10-8 overall and 6-3 in the Mid-Continent League.

Trego won the boys contest Friday night, 45-28.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 14-4 lead after one period and led 22-14 at the break. Trego led 36-24 after three quarters and pulled away in the fourth stanza to win 45-28.

Josh Sohm led Russell with nine points. Charlie Krug scored seven points.

Owen Day paced Trego with 15 points.

Trego outrebounded Russell 23 to 19 and 10 to 3 on the offensive boards.

The Broncos also committed 25 turnovers and forced only 16 Trego turnovers.

The Russell boys fall to 9-8 overall and 3-5 in the MCL.
