Girls: Russell 49, Plainville 41 (OT)
Boys: Russell 68, Plainville 56

The Russell High School girls basketball team traveled to Plainville on Tuesday, January 31 and won 49-41 in overtime.

The Lady Broncos led 9-7 after one quarter and 21-15 at halftime. Russell's lead grew to 12 points in the third period and the Lady Broncos led 31-21 heading into the fourth frame. However, the Lady Cardinals stormed back, outscored Russell 18-8 in the fourth quarter and forced overtime with the score tied at 39-39 after four periods. The Lady Broncos controlled the overtime period, outscored Plainville 10-2 in OT and claimed the 49-41 win.

Sophomore Aubrey Birney led Russell with a career-high 14 points. Sophomore Madison Sohm followed with a career-high eight points. Junior Harlee Donovan also scored eight points.

Freshman Nadalyn Ganoung paced Plainville with 11 points followed by 10 points from senior Emily Stamper. Senior Taylor Rogers had 10 rebounds.

Plainville outrebounded the Lady Broncos 30 to 23 overall and 14 to 10 on the offensive glass.

The Russell girls improve to 2-13 overall and 1-5 in the Mid-Continent League.

The Russell boys also picked up a road win at Plainville Tuesday night. The Broncos defeated Plainville 68-56.

The Cardinals led 15-12 after one period and 32-29 at the break. However, the Broncos outscored Plainville 25-11 in the third quarter, led by 15 at one point and held a 54-43 advantage after three stanzas. The Cardinals clawed to within six points down the stretch, but Russell held on for the 68-56 victory.

Senior David Pummell led the Broncos with a career-high 18 points. Senior Jace Peerman followed with 15 points. Senior Jackson Cross scored 14 points and senior Jordayn Buhrle scored 11 points. Buhrle also totaled eight rebounds and Pummell had seven.

Senior Carter Cellmer paced Plainville with 15 points followed by 14 points from junior Braylon Bittel and 10 points from Roy Bright, Jr.

Russell outrebounded Plainville 35 to 27 overall and 14 to 9 on the offensive boards.

The Broncos only committed 11 turnovers compared to Plainville's 20.

The Russell boys improve to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the MCL.
