Russell's Mooney Qualifies for 2nd Straight State Golf Tourney
For the second consecutive year, Russell High School sophomore Jake Mooney will represent the school at the Class 3A State Golf Tournament.
Mooney shot an eight-over par 78, good enough to finish tied for 4th place, and four strokes off the lead in the Class 3A Regional Tournament at the Prairie Dog Golf Course in Norton. Mooney is the lone Bronco Golfer to qualify for state. Kevin Tanner of Lakin took the regional title by one stroke over Eli Jones of Norton who shared the MCL title at last week's league tournament in Hays.
Other Russell Golfers taking part in the regional included James Pummell who finished tied for 35th with a score of 112, Slayde Nuss tied for 37th with a score of 113 and Solomon Moreland placed 44th by carding a score of 118,
Russell as a team finished in 9th place with a total score of 421. Lakin won the team title with a score of 337, 13 strokes ahead of second place Colby.
Mooney will head to the Class 3A State Golf Tournament on May 20 and 21 at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course in Emporia. Tee time on Monday is set for 9 a.m.
