Russell County Farm Bureau is joining together with the Kansas Farm Bureau to host its annual Safety Poster Program.

The contest, which is open to first through sixth graders throughout the state, has been going for more than 70 years and is aimed at reducing accidents by developing "safety-minded" youth.

Last year, two Russell County students were honored at the state level. Hadlee Brown finished second in the first/second grade division and Kinley Stoughton received honorable mention recognition in the third/fourth grade division.

This year's theme is "Roadmap for Safety - Farm, Family, Community." Suggested topics include tractor safety, families caring for families, general farmer wellness, mental health awareness and getting home safely (roadway safety).

Posters are judged on the county level with the winning poster from each of the three divisions submitted for judging at the state level. Cash prizes are given for the first three places in each division at the county level.

At the state level, first place winners receive $100, $75 for second place and $50 for third place. In addition, the teacher of each of the top three winners in all divisions will receive a $50 gift card to use to promote agriculture in their classroom.

“An effective safety poster displays one main idea,"  says Russell County Farm Bureau Coordinator Kelly Driscoll. “We’ve seen some great posters over the years with state winners. It’s always interesting to see what safety topics the kids choose for their posters.”

Farm Bureau will provide 8 ½ x 13 poster paper, or you may use your own paper with the following information on the back of your poster:
