On August 17 at 4:01 AM, Russell County 911 received a call stating that a male subject was suffering from a gunshot wound in the 1300 block of North Elm Street in Russell.

According to a press release from Russell Chief of Police Jordan Harrison, the first arriving police officer located the victim, a 32-year-old male, suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his right leg. Russell County EMS personnel transported the victim to Russell Regional Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The investigation into the original disturbance and gunshot is ongoing, however, a suspect has been identified. This is believed to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the public. The case will be forwarded to the Russell County Attorney for his consideration.

At 6:36 AM, the victim from the original incident learned he was going to be taken into custody for a no bond, failure to appear warrant through Russell County District Court. This information led him to flee from the officer at the hospital, starting a foot pursuit.

A perimeter was setup in the area just northwest of the hospital and the subject was taken into custody at 7:15 AM.

While the subject was running from law enforcement, he entered a garage in the unit block of South Lincoln Street and stole an article of clothing.

The 32-year-old male was booked into the Russell County Jail for the existing warrant. He was also booked in on new charges of felony interference with law enforcement, burglary and theft. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The Russell Police Department thanks the Russell County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, Ellis County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Russell County 911 Communications and Russell County EMS for their assistance in this case.
