On August 20, 1976, then President Gerald Ford came to Russell to announce Bob Dole as his Vice Presidential running mate.

40 years later to the day on August 20, 2016, the Russell County Historical Society and the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics celebrated that day with a small re-enactment of the announcement in front of the Russell County Courthouse.

Some of the same faces were there. Some were not. But it turned out to be a great time to revisit and learn about an important day in the community's history.

Nancy Lane, who was the Russell City Council President and acting Mayor of Russell that day in 1976 due to the absence of Mayor Roger Williams, was one of the first people to greet President Ford and Dole when they arrived in Russell.

She described one of her favorite Bob Dole moments that day.
