Canton-Galva Boys Upset Sylvan-Lucas in Sub-State Semis
The Sylvan-Lucas Unified Mustang boys basketball team saw its season come to an end on Thursday, February 29 with a 45-37 loss to Canton-Galva in the semifinals of the Solomon Class 1A Division 1 Sub-State Tournament.
The sixth-seeded Eagles jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and led 11-5 after the first period. Canton-Galva held a 15-10 advantage at the half and also led 30-24 after three stanzas. The second-seeded Mustangs never got any closer than three points from the Eagles and Canton-Galva scored the upset 45-37 win to advance to Saturday's Sub-State Championship game against host and top seed Solomon.
Junior Connor Charvat led Sylvan-Lucas with 11 points and five rebounds. Junior Cade Brokes had 10 boards.
Freshman Kustom Schamp paced Canton-Galva with 11 points and junior Noah Collins followed with 10 points.
The Mustangs outrebounded Canton-Galva 33 to 23 overall, but the Eagles had an eight to six advantage on the offensive glass.
Sylvan-Lucas committed 25 turnovers compared to just 15 for the Eagles.
The Sylvan-Lucas boys finish the season with a record of 14-7 overall and 10-1 in the Northern Plains League.
