Russell High's Mooney Captures Ellsworth Tourney Title

Russell High School sophomore Jake Mooney took top honors at the Ellsworth Varsity Invitational on Thursday by carding a score of 72 to win the individual tournament title by two strokes.

Mooney defeated Ellinwood teammates Drew Heinz and Mason Moore by two and three strokes respectively. Ellinwood won the team title with a score of 319 by a wide margin over second place TMP-Marian.  Russell finished fifth as a team with a total score of 383.

Other Bronco golfers taking part in the final regular season tournament included Slayde Nuss who finished the day tied for 17th with a score of 95, Solomon Moreland tied for 33rd with a score of 106 and Jonathan Sandberg finished 38th turning in a score of 110.

The Bronco golfers will begin postseason competition on Thursday, May 9 when they travel to Hays to take part in the Mid-Continent League Tournament hosted by TMP-Marian.  Tee time is set for 1 p.m.
