Russell Splits at Hoxie

Girls: Russell 47, Hoxie 43

The Russell High School girls basketball team traveled to Hoxie on Monday, January 31 and won 47-43.

Hoxie led 10-9 after the first quarter, but the Lady Broncos outscored the Lady Indians 18 to 5 in the second period and Russell led 27-15 at halftime. Hoxie chipped away in the third stanza and Russell held a 34-27 advantage heading into the final quarter. The Lady Indians tied the game at 42-42 in the fourth period, but Russell was able to reclaim the lead and hold on for the 47-43 victory.

Emerson Nichols paced Russell with 16 points. Rylan Reeves followed with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Hayley Jacobs led Hoxie with 13 points. Kinley Rogers followed with 12 points and 13 boards.

The Lady Indians outrebounded Russell 29 to 25 and 19 to 12 on the offensive glass.

Russell was 8-of-14 from the free throw line, while Hoxie was just 3-of-10.

The Russell girls improve to 7-7 overall and 3-2 in the Mid-Continent League.

The Russell boys lost 58-47 at Hoxie on Monday.

The Indians led 16-15 after one period and pulled away in the second quarter to lead 27-18 at the break. Hoxie led 44-30 after three frames and extended the lead to as much as 20 points in the fourth quarter. Russell fought back, but still fell 58-47.

Russell's Jordayn Buhrle recorded his second-straight double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. Josh Sohm followed with 12 points and eight rebounds. Jackson Cross also scored 12 points.

Hoxie's Ashton Dowell led all scorers with 20 points. Miles Baalman scored 13 points for the Indians and Cade Gourley also finished with 11 points.

Russell outrebounded Hoxie 34 to 18 and 14 to 8 on the offensive glass.

The Broncos committed 10 turnovers, while the Indians only turned the ball over five times.

The Russell boys fall to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in the MCL.
