Strobel Places Sixth at Class 3-2-1A Boys State Wrestling Tournament, Three Other Broncos Compete

Four members of the Russell High School wrestling team competed in the Class 3-2-1A Boys State Wrestling Tournament in Hays on Friday and Saturday, February 24 and 25 at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Freshman Xzephren Donner, sophomore Brayden Suchy, sophomore Teagen Pfeifer and senior Brayden Strobel all qualified after finishing in the top four of their weight divisions at the Beloit Regional on Saturday, February 18.

It was the first trip to State for Donner, Suchy and Pfeifer and the second for Strobel.

At 106 pounds, Donner (18-19) went 0-2 at State and did not place. At 157 pounds, Suchy (30-10) went 1-2 at State and did not place. At 165 pounds, Pfeifer (30-11) went 1-2 at State and did not place.

At 175 pounds, Strobel (24-12) went 3-3 at State and placed sixth. He had to fight back from the consolation side of the bracket after losing his first match on Friday. He went 2-2 on Saturday and lost to Republic County senior Garrett Siemsen by a 10-8 decision in the fifth place match.

First Round - Defeated Garden Plain senior Elliot Helten by 6-4 decision.
Second Round - Lost to Rossville freshman Paxton Willett by 5-2 decision.
Saturday:
Third Round - Lost to Phillipsburg sophomore Seth Keeten by 6-3 decision. Tournament done.

165 - Teagen Pfeifer (30-11) (1-2 State) - Sophomore - 3rd Place at MCL Tournament

Friday:
First Round - Lost to Humboldt sophomore Cole Mathes by 6-5 decision.
Second Round - Defeated Anthony/Harper-Chaparral freshman Jesus Reyes by fall.
Saturday:
Third Round - Lost to Garden Plain junior Gage Lee by fall. Tournament done.

175 - Brayden Strobel (24-12) (3-3 State - 6th Place) - Senior - 1st Place at MCL Tournament

Friday:
First Round - Lost to Cottonwood Falls-Chase County junior Micah Cauthers by disqualification.
Second Round - Defeated Larned sophomore Landon Haney by 12-2 major decision.
Saturday:
Third Round - Defeated Alma-Wabaunsee junior Alex Beggs by 7-4 decision.
Fourth Round - Defeated Hillsboro senior Lane Rogers by fall.
Fifth Round - Lost to Hoxie sophomore Sam Watkins by fall.
Sixth Round - Lost to Republic County senior Garrett Siemsen by 10-8 decision. Finished Sixth Place.
