Sylvan-Lucas Girls Fall in Sub-State Semifinal

The Sylvan-Lucas Unified Lady Mustang basketball team ended its season on Friday, March 1 with a 45-41 loss to Goessel in the semifinals of the Solomon Class 1A Division 1 Sub-State Tournament in Solomon.

Both teams started slow and the game was tied 8-8 after the first period. The second-seeded Lady Mustangs pulled ahead 23-14 at halftime and led 31-21 after three quarters. Sylvan-Lucas lost senior Emma Cline to a significant injury at the end of the third stanza that delayed gameplay for more than 20 minutes. When play resumed, third-seeded Goessel took control, outscored the Lady Mustangs 24-10 in the final frame and came from behind to win, 45-41.

Junior Maggie Labertew paced Sylvan-Lucas with 14 points. Cline had eight rebounds.

Junior Greta Scholle led the Lady Bluebirds with 15 points followed by 12 points from junior Abbigail Funk.

The Lady Mustangs outrebounded Goessel 35 to 17 overall and seven to six on the offensive glass.

Sylvan-Lucas committed 29 turnovers compared to just 18 turnovers for the Lady Bluebirds.

The Sylvan-Lucas girls finish the season with an overall record of 16-5 and a Northern Plains League record of 10-1.
